I'm going to only say this once, I am a fan of Green Lantern, and I have been for a long time. Hal Jordan, while not the BEST lantern, has always been my favorite. In the comics I found John Stewart to be boring and very simple minded in his constructs. As I've gotten older I've grown to appreciate him more, but I still stand by my initial assessment to a degree.
I have complained about the lack of Lanterns in the DC universe for a long time. They basically dropped them after the travesty of a movie starring Ryan Reynolds, who I feel should have been Kyle Rayner instead. All that aside, I was cautiously optimistic when I heard about this show. I was excited to see them finally explore the lore of the Lanterns, but I was worried they would just mess it up again.
I was right to worry. They didn't stick to the way the ring picks its wielder, they changed the lore of the lanterns, they changed John and they changed fundamentals of how the ring operates. It was just galling to me as I watched trailers and saw how different they were going to make it. I got more worried as time went on, but I was determined to watch the show anyway. I want more Lanterns out there on the big screen and in shows, so I had to watch it.
I'm so glad I did. These are not the characters I love. There are big differences, but with multiple universes, and multiple stories I can accept those changes. I suspended disbelief and instead approached the show as if these were completely new people I'd never seen or heard of and it is a really good show. Whether you are a long standing fan or completely new to the franchise, you can find something to enjoy here. Hell, if you don't like superhero movies, or are burned out on the standard formula, I say give this a try. You won't find the usual, and the powers do come in to play, but are used sparingly.
I wholeheartedly recommend watching this show. Put aside what you know about the Green Lanterns and instead just strap yourself in. You won't regret it.
